How to Play North Dakota Powerball
Playing North Dakota Powerball is a walk in the park. However, if you’ve never participated in lottery drawings before, you may need a friendly heads-up. Here’s what you need to do:
- Visit your favorite lottery retailer in North Dakota and ask for a Powerball payslip.
- Select five white ball numbers between 1 and 69.
- Pick one red Powerball number from 1 to 26.
- Instead of picking the numbers yourself, you can also select ‘Quick Pick' which allows the lottery terminal to choose random numbers for you. You can also include a ‘Power Play' option at this time.
- Once the ticket is printed, all you need to do is wait for the Powerball drawing.
Moreover, a player can purchase a Powerball ticket for multiple drawings and participate in 15 consecutive draws.
Another way to play ND Powerball is to purchase your tickets online. You can do it on your computer or mobile phone provided that you’re physically located in North Dakota. This is how you do it:
- Visit the North Dakota Lottery website and create an account.
- Log in and fund your wallet with the desired amount between $10 and $999.
- Click the green ‘Pick and Click' tab, select Powerball from the offered games, and mark the number of draws you’d like to take part in up to a whole year.
- Select the numbers personally or choose the Quick Pick option. You can also tick the box to add the Power Play multiplier.
- Checkout and confirm your purchase once you’ve created your Powerball ticket.
Each Powerball ticket costs $2, and you can also add the previously mentioned Power Play option regardless of how you play. Power Play will increase your non-jackpot winning chances for an extra charge of $1. The Power Play option applies to all non-jackpot prizes except the match of five white balls, and it can boost your winning potential by two, three, four, and five times, or even 10 times if the jackpot is worth $150 million or less.
North Dakota Powerball Drawing Schedule
North Dakota Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 9:59pm CT. To enter the running on the night of the drawing, you have to buy tickets before 8:58pm CT on that day.
Payouts, Odds, and Rules
Every player who buys a North Dakota Powerball ticket will have nine ways to win a prize. The jackpot represents the biggest prize, and it is based on game sales. Therefore, the jackpot will grow until one or more players buy a winning ticket and match five white balls and one red Powerball.
In the case of more than one Powerball jackpot winner, the total prize is divided equally among lucky players. Other prizes may reduce if the claims are bigger than the available prize fund.
The overall winning odds are 1:24.87, and the odds of winning any other combination are presented in the table below.
Numbers Matched | Prize | Odds |
5 White Balls + Red Powerball | Jackpot | 1:292,201,338 |

One Red Powerball | $4 | 1:38 |
How to Claim North Dakota Powerball Prizes
Claiming your ND Powerball prize depends on the winning amount. If your prize is worth $599 or less, you can claim it at any ND Lottery retail shop. For prizes higher than $600, you’ll have to visit the ND Lottery's office from 8:00am to 12:00pm, or between 1:00pm and 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Note that the office is closed during the holidays, so you can't cash out your prize at that time.
Another way to claim your prize is via mail, and to do that, you’ll have to send the following documents to the ND Lottery office:
- A completed, printed, and signed Prize Claim Form that you can download from the lottery website or pick up from a lottery retailer.
- The signed winning ticket.
- A copy of your ID.
The lottery is not responsible for any risks that might occur when mailing a ticket, so make a copy of it and keep it for yourself.
If you’re an online North Dakota Powerball player, all the winnings up to $599 will automatically appear on your winning account. You can then use the winnings to buy another ticket, renew your expired online play, keep it there for future play, or send the money to your bank account or receive it via check.
For winnings of $600 and above, the North Dakota Lottery will contact you for player verification.
North Dakota Powerball Biggest Winners
Many lucky players profited from ND Powerball — some won small and others bigger. However, only a few of them managed to hit it big, and one of them is Tammy Edland from McHenry. On January 12, 2019, Tammy purchased the ticket online using the Pick & Click option and won the second prize worth $1 million. A few months later, an anonymous winner bought a Powerball with Power Play ticket and matched five white balls, making the prize worth $2 million altogether.
Powerball History and Facts
- The North Dakota lottery dates back to 2004, with Powerball acting as the first game in the Peace Garden State.
- North Dakota is one of a few states where you can purchase Powerball tickets online and in retail shops.
- Players can claim their Powerball prizes within 180 days of winning them.
- You can get your jackpot prize in a single lump-sum payment or annual payments over 30 years. Unless you choose the cash option within 60 days of claiming the prize, the Lottery will proceed with delivering your winnings through the annuity option.
- If a player passes away before receiving all annuity payments, the Multi-State Lottery Association's game group can expedite the payout of the remaining payments to the player's estate.
