About the Lottery in Brazil

Caixa Economica Federal logo

The biggest lotteries in Brazil are all made available to the public by Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF), a wholly government owned bank and financial institution that is responsible for conducting games such as Mega Sena and Lotofacil.

The company was founded all the way back in 1861, but only started operations of Brazilian lotteries a century later in 1961. Today, they raise billions annually to help fund social projects that support education, sports promotion, social security, and more.

List of Brazilian Lotteries

Mega-Sena

The biggest lottery in Brazil, Mega-Sena earns that title partly due to its huge jackpots. The grand prize starts at R$2 million, but rollover every draw unless it's won. And with no prize ceiling, you can expect to see much larger amounts.

To play, you can choose from 6 to 15 numbers from 1 to 60. Picking 6 numbers gives you one play, while picking 15 earns you 5,005 plays. Picking more numbers also increases the prizes you can win.

Once a year on New Year's Eve, a special drawing called Mega Da Virada is held. This drawing has even larger prizes up for grabs. If nobody wins the jackpot, the prize is shared between players who match 5 numbers, instead.

Mega-Sena has drawings every Wednesday and Saturday evening at 8:00 PM Brasilia Time.

Quina

Brazil's Quina is another crowd favorite that's worth checking out. It's a smaller lottery in comparison to Mega-Sena, but the game makes up for it with more frequent drawings.

The grand prize starts at R$500,000 and continues to roll over until it's won. There's no limit to how many times the jackpot can roll over, so 8-digit numbers are a common sight. To play, you can pick 5 numbers from 1 to 80. You can also play more numbers for better odds.

Quina has drawings from Mondays to Saturdays (except national holiday) at 8:00 PM Brasilia Time.

Dupla Sena

Dupla Sena is another noteworthy game due mostly to its unique double-draw mechanic. Players can participate in 2 separate draws for the price of one ticket! It also has relatively favorable odds, so the game's popularity is unsurprising.

Jackpots start at R$300,000, roll over every draw until it's won, and have no maximum cap. To play, just pick 6 numbers from 1 to 50. If you match all 6, you take home the grand prize. Unlucky with the first draw? Maybe the second draw will earn you that win.

Dupla Sena has 2 back-to-back drawings every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evening at 8:00 PM Brasilia Time.

Lotofacil

Translated as “easy lotto”, Lotofacil is exactly that – a simple lottery game that's easy to play and get into. All you have to do is pick 15 numbers from 1 to 25. If you match all 15, you win the top prize which starts at R$2 million. There are also prizes for matching 11 or more numbers.

Lotofacil has drawings every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evening at 8:00 PM Brasilia Time.

Dia de Sorte

Dia de Sorte, or Lucky Day, is the newest game on this list. It features pretty favorable odds and a minimum jackpot of R$300,000. To play, just pick 7 numbers from 1 to 31, plus a Lucky Month from January to December.

If you match all 7 main numbers, you win the jackpot. Matching the Lucky Month also earns you an additional R$2.

Dia de Sorte has drawings Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 8:00 PM Brasilia Time.

Brazilian Lotto Winners

Lottery winners stories from Brazil are pretty uncommon. That's because their identities are not shared or publicized in any way. However, here are some interesting tidbits that might interest you:

  • The largest jackpot in Brazil amounted to R$289.4 million. This was for Mega-Sena last April 2019.
  • Renne Senna, winner of a R$52 million jackpot for Mega-Sena in 2005, was murdered not long after his win. His widow, Adriana Almeida, was a primary suspect. However, she was found innocent acquitted in 2011.

Can lottery winners stay anonymous in Brazil?

Yes. Caixa doesn't disclose the names of lottery winners to the public, only the city where the winning ticket was purchased.
