About the South Dakota Lottery

South Dakota SD Lottery logo

The South Dakota Lottery launched in 1987 after voters approved an amendment to the state’s constitution. In 1989, South Dakota became the first state to offer a video lottery and has successfully defended several repeals of video lottery games.

In 1990, the South Dakota Lottery joined the Multi-State Lottery Association, and in 1993, Dakota Cash became South Dakota’s flagship cash lotto game. 

Since its inception, the South Dakota Lottery has contributed more than $3 billion to support gambling addiction treatment services, environmental causes, education, recycling and waste disposal programs, drinking water and waste-water improvement projects.

SD Lottery Rules

  • You must be 18 or older to play Scratch and Lotto games;
  • You must be 21 or older to play Video Lottery;
  • Tickets cannot be sold by mail, phone or internet;
  • Tickets must be bought from a licensed South Dakota retailer.

South Dakota Lottery Tickets

South Dakota Lottery tickets must be purchased from a licensed retailer. Winning tickets are valid for up to 180 days from draw day for online games, while Scratch games also remain valid for 180 days following their end date.

Can I buy SD Lottery tickets online?

South Dakota Lottery tickets cannot be purchased online, over the phone or through the mail. Tickets can only be sold by a licensed South Dakota retailer. There is an official website where you can check winning numbers or become a Players Club member for second chance drawings and special promos.

South Dakota Lottery Games and Drawing Schedule

Powerball

Pick five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball from 1 to 26. Tickets cost $2 per play or $3 with optional Power Play or Double Play. Power Play will double the ‘Match 5’ jackpot prize and apply a multiplier on other non-jackpot prizes, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x.

Double Play gives players a second chance to match their numbers in a separate draw with a top prize of $10 million. Tickets must be purchased by 9pm (CT) on the draw nights.

Drawings: Every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday night.

Mega Millions

If you want tot play Mega Millions, pick five numbers from 1 to 70 and one Mega Ball from 1 to 25. Tickets cost $2 per play or $3 with optional Megaplier play. The Megaplier applies a multiplier to non-jackpot lottery prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x. Mega Millions tickets must be purchased by 9pm (CT) on draw nights.

Drawings: Every Tuesday and Friday night.

Lotto America

To start off, Lotto America pick five numbers from 1 to 52 and one All Star Ball from 1 to 10. Lotto America tickets cost $1 per play or $2 with optional All Star Bonus which applies a multiplier to non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x and 5x. The jackpot starts at $2 million and tickets must be purchased by 9pm on draw nights.

Drawings: Every Wednesday and Saturday night.

Dakota Cash

Dakota Cash is exclusive to SD, tickets cost $1 per play or $2 with optional EZ match instant win feature. Pick five numbers from 1 to 35. EZ match numbers are chosen by the terminal, match any to the chosen Dakota Cash numbers to win the respective prize. Tickets must be purchased by 9pm (CT) on draw nights and the jackpot starts at $20,000.

Drawings: Every Wednesday and Saturday night. 

Lucky For Life

Pick five numbers from 1 to 48 and one Lucky Ball from 1 to 18. Tickets cost $2 per play and the top prize is $1,000 per day for life. Tickets must be purchased by 8:30pm (CT) on draw nights.

How to Claim a Lottery Prize in South Dakota

  1. Sign the back of the ticket in the space provided;
  2. $100 or less, claim at any authorised retailer or by mail;
  3. $101 or more, claim from a State Lottery office in Rapid City, Pierre or Sioux Falls;
  4. Jackpot winning tickets for Powerball, Mega Millions, Dakota Cash, top prize-winning ticket Lucky for Life, 2nd prize tickets for Powerball and Mega Millions must be claimed in person at the Lottery Office in Pierre.

South Dakota Lottery Second Chances – What is Second Chance?

Second chance games give players another opportunity by re-entering a ticket that wasn’t a winner the first time around. By becoming a member of the South Dakota Players Club, players can enter second chance draws for selected Scratch games. All you need to do is scan the barcode for that Scratch ticket to be in with the chance of winning a prize.

How Does Second Chance Work for the SD Lottery?

Players Club members can check the list online for eligible Scratch games and when the second chance draw is due. Players are able to enter up to 40 eligible non-winning Scratch tickets within a 24 hour period. 

Once the second chance draw has been held, the SD Lottery will notify winners by email and post their name on the Players Club website, the SD Lottery website, Twitter and Facebook.

South Dakota Tax Information

The state of South Dakota does not tax lottery winnings, but the South Dakota Lottery is required to inform the IRS and South Dakota Department of Revenue. The lottery is also required by the IRS to withhold 24% from prizes of more than $5,000. 

Prize amounts of $600 to $4,999 will be accompanied by a W-2G form. For winners who are not a citizen or resident of the U.S., South Dakota Lottery withholds a higher percentage of 30% for prizes over $5,000.
