About the Washington Lottery

The Washington Lottery was founded in 1982. Ever since then, it’s been generating funds for numerous state programs. The biggest share of the WA Lottery’s profits goes toward its largest beneficiary, the Education Construction Fund, and other education programs.

Apart from that, the lottery also makes contributions to problem gambling prevention and treatment organizations, as well as stadium funding. It is overseen by the official Lottery Commission.

Washington Lottery Rules

To be able to participate in the WA Lottery, you should follow the rules below.

  • You must be at least 18 years old to purchase a Washington Lottery ticket.
  • You have to buy lottery tickets at a licensed lottery retail store located in the state.
  • You need to sign the back of your ticket after you’ve bought it, as evidence that you’re its rightful owner.
  • You must not alter, forge, or resell the tickets.
  • You have to claim the winning ticket within 180 days after the drawing date, that is, the official end of the game.
  • You must bring your signed winning ticket, a valid ID with your photograph, and a document proving your Social Security Number to be able to redeem your lottery winnings.

Washington Lottery Tickets

If you’re 18 years old or above, you can purchase a WA Lottery ticket at one of the authorized lottery locations in the state. You’ll have 180 days after the draw date, or the official end of the game, to claim your winnings.

Jackpot winners will have 60 days after they have validated their ticket to decide how they would like to receive their winnings. The prize can be paid in annuities or in cash. Those who do not make that decision in due time will receive the prize in annuities.

Can I Buy WA Tickets Online?

No, you cannot. To participate in the WA Lottery games, you have to buy your ticket from one of the Lottery retailers in the state.

Washington Lottery Games and Drawing Schedules

Powerball

Powerball can earn you a fortune if you follow these simple rules. Select five numbers between 1 and 69 and one Powerball number between 1 and 26. If you add Power Play mode to your ticket, you can expand your non-jackpot winnings up to 10 times. Moreover, with Double Play, you can get a second chance at winning. A regular play is worth $2, and each of the modes will cost you a dollar more. The drawings take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, with Powerball at 7:59 p.m. and Double Play at 8:30 p.m. PST.

Mega Millions

For only $2 per play, Mega Millions is another jackpot game that can make you rich overnight. To participate in Mega Millions, you need to select five numbers from 1 to 70 and a Mega Ball number from 1 to 25. While playing Mega Millions, you can even multiply your winnings with Megaplier mode for just a dollar more. Mega Millions numbers are drawn every Tuesday and Friday at 8 p.m. PST.

Lotto

Lotto doubles your chances of winning a prize for a dollar per play. Players need to select two sets of six numbers between 1 and 49. If your number combinations match the winning numbers, this Washington Lottery’s rolling jackpot can be yours. The drawings occur on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. PST.

Hit 5

With Hit 5, your five-digit combination can land you a progressive jackpot that starts at $100,000 and keeps growing in line with the ticket sales. You can choose your numbers from a pool of 1 to 42. If you’d like, you can partake in as many as 25 future consecutive drawings with Advance Play mode, as well. Each play is $1, and the drawings are held every night at 8 p.m. PST.

Match 4

As the name suggests, WA Lottery’s Match 4 gives you an opportunity to score a win with no more than four numbers on your payslip. Once you choose digits between 1 and 24, you can use them in up to 25 future drawings, as well. Each play is $2, and drawings are held every day at 8:00 p.m. PST.

Pick 3

To participate in this game, you need to choose a set of three numbers from 0 to 9, and the way in which you would like to bet on them. The Washington Lottery offers several playstyles for you to choose from. Here’s what’s available:

  • Straight: With this bet type, you’ll have to match your numbers to the winning numbers in the exact order.
  • Box: Here, you can match the numbers you’ve selected in any order.
  • 3-Way Box: If you opt for this playstyle, you’ll need to match two of the three winning numbers in any order.
  • Straight/Box: You can match the drawn numbers in either the exact or any order.
  • 3-Way Straight/Box: This bet type allows you to match two of your three numbers in either exact or any order.
  • Front Pair: As you may have guessed, your first two numbers should match the winning numbers in the exact order.
  • Back Pair: As opposed to the previous one, the last two digits you have selected should match the drawn numbers in the exact order.
  • Superbox: This one allows you to bet on all possible combinations of your three selected digits.
  • 3-Way Superbox: With this playstyle, you have to pick a 3-digit number. Two digits need to be the same. Then, you can bet on three combinations of those.

The cost of plays and the game payouts differ between bet types. You can spend $0.50 or $1 on Straight, Box, 3-Way Box, Back Pair, and Front Pair playstyles. Meanwhile, Straight/Box and 3-Way Straight/Box will cost you $1. In addition, you can bet $3.00 or $6.00 on Superbox and $1.50 or $3.00 on 3-Way Superbox. The drawings take place every night at 8 p.m. PST.

Daily Keno

With WA Lottery’s Daily Keno, you will get to choose the amount you want to wager, the number of spots you’d like to wager on, and the numbers that need to align with those spots. You can bet $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $10, or $20, choose anywhere from 1 to 10 spots, and select numbers from 1 to 80. All of these choices will determine how much you can win. Twenty numbers are drawn every night at 8 p.m.

Washington Tax Information

You’ll be happy to learn that Washington is one of the rare states that don’t impose taxes on lottery winnings. Nevertheless, since the IRS requires that state lotteries report all prizes worth $600 or more, your winnings are likely still subject to federal taxes.

The federal tax rate is 24% for US citizens and 30% for non-resident aliens who have won a prize valued at $5,000 or more. In addition, all winners of prizes over $600 who have debt owed to the state will have that amount subtracted from their prize before they receive it.

Washington Lottery FAQ

Are Washington lottery rules different if you play online?

You cannot play the Washington Lottery games online. To participate in the WA Lottery drawings, you have to buy tickets from the Lottery’s retailers.

How do I know lotteries listed on Lottery Critic are legitimate?

We only cover lotteries that are licensed and regulated in their respective states. Furthermore, all information that you can find in our lottery reviews is collected from the official state lottery websites. We also keep up with all the changes that those websites introduce and make sure to update the games and their rules, jackpots, odds, and payouts regularly. So, you can rest assured knowing that everything you read on Lottery Critic is completely accurate and trustworthy.

How long does it take to receive your prize if you win the Washington Lottery?

Jackpot winners who decide to receive their prizes in cash will be paid immediately. However, the amount that they’ll receive will differ from the one advertised. Namely, Lotto winners will receive 50% of the advertised jackpot, while the prize amount for Mega Millions and Powerball winners will depend on the bond factor on the draw game date.

Those who choose annuities will receive their prizes in increments over a number of years. Lotto winners will be paid out over 25 years, while Mega Millions and Powerball winners will receive their prizes over the period of 30 years, with a 5% increase each year.
