The Australia Monday Lotto offers up a nofrills lottery game that promises relatively good odds compared to other much bigger lotteries. Some features that lotto lovers no doubt love—like rollover jackpots and multiple draws per week—are absent here. But that doesn’t make Australia Monday Lotto a game undeserving of attention. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Why is that? Find out as I take a closer look below!
About Australia Monday Lotto
The Australia Monday Lotto was first established way back in 1979, and was originally operated by NSW Lotteries. However, starting October 13, 2008 Australia’s Tattersall began offering the Monday and Wednesday Lotto games. Throughout its long history, the Australia Monday Lotto has had several changes to its mechanics made—such as bumping the number of balls from 40 to 45, and adding a sixth prize tier. The current mechanics have been in place since February 26, 2012.

Superdraws: Occasionally, superdraws are held on Monday nights where the stakes can go up as high as AU$5 million.

How Does Australia Monday Lotto Work?
The Basics
Australia Monday Lotto is quite easy to pick up and play. The mechanics are dead simple: you pick six numbers from a selection pool ranging from 1 to 45, while two supplementary numbers—which determine who wins in certain nonjackpot tiers—are given during the draw.
To win the jackpot, you must match all six of your numbers, while matching five plus one or two supplementary numbers will net you the second prize. In total, there are six prize tiers you can win in, and you only need to match one or two of your numbers plus two supplementary numbers to win the lowest prize tier.
Speaking of prizes, Australia Monday Lotto is different from most lottery games in that the jackpots don’t fluctuate—they are of a fixed amount. You’re looking at a AU$1,000,000 top prize for every draw. This also means that jackpots don’t rollover. Every now and then, Australia Monday Lotto also holds superdraws—special draws that can offer up to AU$5 million in jackpot prizes.
The Odds of Winning
Australia Monday Lotto’s are generally favorable. For instance, you have a 1 in 8,145,060 chance of winning the jackpot. If you compare that with the odds of, say, the US Powerball—with its 1 in 292,201,338 chance of winning the jackpot—and you’ll immediately see that the difference is night and day as far as odds go. Heck, even Ontario 49—which is a smaller game like Australia Monday Lotto—still has slightly longer odds. Check out the table below to see:
Numbers Matched Odds of Winning
6 1 in 8,145,060
5 + 1 or 2 Supplementary 1 in 678,755
5 1 in 36,689
4 1 in 733
3 + 1 or 2 Supplementary 1 in 297
1 or 2 + 2 Supplementary 1 in 144
So What Happens if You Win?
Because of the unique prize structure of Australia Monday Lotto, winning the fixed jackpot comes with a few caveats. For starters, if there are more than four jackpot winners, the jackpot will then climb to AU$4 million and will be divided accordingly to them. However, if there are four or less winning ticket holders, then each will winner will receive AU$1 million.
Two more things worth noting about Australia Monday Lotto: all prizes are 100% taxfree and paid in lump sum form. That said, if you played this game using an online lottery service then, depending on the rules of the lottery site, a commission fee might be deducted from your winnings. Plus, if you live in another country, you also might have to deal with your local tax laws. At least, you won’t have to worry about tax withholdings at the source.
The Biggest Australia Monday Lotto Winners
Thanks to favorable odds, Australia Monday Lotto has produced many millionaires over the years. Here are some of more recent $1 million winners:
An ACT shopper became one of the four jackpot winners for the September 11, 2017 draw, which means he would have taken home AU$1,000,000. I say “would have” because his luck didn’t end there—his system entry actually won several lowertier prizes as well! As a result, he took home $1,001,333.60.
A Canberra man—who wishes to stay anonymous—once won AU$22.25 in Australia’s Saturday Lotto and thought that, all things considered, it was a pretty good win. Little did he know that, on June 19, 2017, his definition of a “good win” would be challenged. After all, the man had just won the coveted AU$1,000,000 Australia Monday Lotto jackpot!
A syndicate group of 10, who bought their tickets at Canley Vale, won the AU$1M jackpot on May 24, 2017. The syndicate was the only top prize winner on that particular draw.
Three retired friends won the AU$1,000,000 top prize on May 8, 2017. The women—who all wished to remain anonymous—bought their winning ticket at the Engandine Central Newsagency at the Engandine Central Shopping Centre.
Australia Monday Lotto Fun Facts
Australia Monday Lotto goes by different names—depending on the region. In Queensland, for example, it is called Monday Gold Lotto, whereas it is called X Lotto in South Australia.
Winners of Australia Monday Lotto can choose to remain anonymous.
Australia Monday Lotto is identical in every way—save for when draws are held—to the Australia Wednesday Lotto (so much so that they are usually collectively referred to as the Monday & Wednesday Lotto).
The Bottom Line on Australia Monday Lotto
Australia Monday Lotto has a lot of good stuff for lotto lovers to chew on. Not only does it offer generally favorable odds compared to bigger international lotteries, this game from the Land Down Under also pays out prizes as 100% taxfree cash. The jackpot may be a fixed amount, but AU$1,000,000 is nothing to scoff at. And if you were hoping to win more than that, there are also the occasional superdraw wherein you could win up to AU$5,000,000. Australia Monday Lotto may not be as big as other lotteries, but for a midrange lottery, it still packs a punch.
