About the Wyoming Lottery

Wyoming has one of the youngest state lotteries, having only started the Wyoming Lottery Corporation in 2013. The first game started selling tickets in 2014. The WyoLotto differs from many state lotteries because it’s explicitly forbidden from running scratch games. Likewise, unlike many state lotteries, the Wyoming Lottery operates as a private corporation rather than a state office.

The Wyoming Lottery has paid out over $51 million in prizes to various winners since August 2014. It has also raised over $13 million for the Wyoming general treasury. From there, proceeds have been distributed to various cities and municipalities.

Wyoming Lottery Tickets

Wyoming Lottery tickets are available at any of the 440+ authorized retailers in the state. Tickets can be bought anytime, except for mandated “draw breaks” immediately prior to the relevant draw. Powerball and Mega Millions tickets, for example, can only be bought up to one hour before the draw you wish to join.

Players have up to 180 days from the draw to claim prizes.

Can I buy WY Lottery tickets online?

No, you can’t. Like most states, Wyoming limits players to buying tickets in person.

WY Lottery Tickets Payment Methods

Wyoming limits all lottery ticket payments to cash. This policy is similar to what you’ll find in other states like Louisiana and Arkansas. In Wyoming, it’s done mostly as a deterrent to problematic gambling or addictive gambling behavior.

Wyoming Lottery Games and Drawing Schedules

Lucky for Life

Wyoming is also part of the multi-state Lucky for Life game. The state runs Lucky for Life alongside 20+ other states, including Nebraska, Delaware, and Idaho.

Lucky for Life promises a jackpot of $1000 a year for life. To win, players must match all winning draw numbers with the ones on their ticket. Each ticket requires 5 numbers from 1-48 and a Lucky Ball number from 1-18.

If players only match the 5 regular numbers but not the Lucky Ball, they will get the second prize of $25,000 a year for life.

Lucky for Life draws take place every Monday and Thursday.

Cowboy Draw

The Cowboy Draw is Wyoming’s flagship state draw game. The jackpot starts at $250,000 and grows with every draw until somebody wins.

Cowboy Draw players must pick 5 numbers from 1-45. A single playslip costs $5, but players select two sets of numbers, getting two chances to win with each play.

Players win the jackpot by matching all 5 winning draw numbers.

Cowboy Draw numbers are drawn every Monday and Thursday.

Notable Winners of Wyoming Lotteries

Wyoming allows lottery winners to remain anonymous. Nevertheless, here are some of the Wyoming Lottery’s notable winners in 2018 and 2019:

  • A player from Casper won the $3,300,000 jackpot for Cowboy Draw in December 2018
  • Several players won $33,000 each playing Cowboy Draw in November 2018
  • Somebody from Evanston won $25,000 a year for life playing Lucky for Life in January 2019
  • Several players won $14,000 each playing Cowboy Draw in March 2019

Wyoming Lottery Scratch Games

Like North Dakota, Wyoming doesn’t allow its state lottery to offer any scratch games.

Wyoming Lottery Second Chances

What is Second Chance?

Second chance games give you another chance to win prizes. You simply enter non-winning draw game tickets or scratch cards into new games. Aside from cash prizes, many second chance games tend to offer prizes like vacation packages or new vehicles. Which tickets are eligible, the frequency of second-chance draws and the prizes on offer all depend on the lottery operator.

To learn more, check out our article on second chance games.

How does Second Chance work for the WY Lottery?

Unlike many state lotteries, the Wyoming Lottery doesn’t offer second chance promotions. Occasionally, however, it runs giveaways tied to particular draw games (e.g., Powerball giveaways). These giveaways often feature prizes like brand new vehicles or cash prizes.

There’s no set time for each giveaway, so it’s best to check the Wyoming Lottery’s official website for news.
