About the Virginia Lottery

The Virginia State Lottery started in 1988 as a way to generate more funds for various state programs. Since 1999, the Virginia Lottery has funneled all of its profits into the state’s K-12 public education program.

In the past decade, the Virginia Lottery has consistently generated around half a billion dollars in net profit every year. These have gone into Virgina’s State Lottery Proceeds Fund, which ensures that all state lottery proceeds go towards public education.

Virginia Lottery Tickets

You can buy Virginia state lottery tickets from any of the 5,000+ authorized retailers and vending machines all over the state. The official Virginia lottery website provides a handy “Where to Play” section that helps you find nearby retailers and machines based on your chosen area or zip code.

You can also sign up for ticket subscriptions for the US Powerball, Mega Millions, and Cash4Life. To do this, you’ll need to create a free online account at the official Virginia lottery website.

Can I buy VA Lottery tickets online?

Yes — for certain lotteries. The Virginia Lottery Commission offers online ticket subscriptions for the US Powerball, Mega Millions, and Cash4Life. All you need to do is create a free online account, top up your credits using your debit card or a bank transfer, and purchase tickets for at least 4 upcoming draws.

If you want to play the other Virginia state lottery games, though, you’re out of luck. You can speed up your ticket purchases by filling out a digital playslip through the VA Lottery mobile app. However, you’ll still have to pay for (and print) the ticket through your nearest retailer.

VA Tickets Payment Methods

Virginia authorized retailers take cash payments for lottery tickets. Depending on the retailer, credit or debit cards might also be accepted. If you sign up for an online ticket subscription, you can top up your account using your debit card or through bank transfers.

Virginia Lottery Games and Drawing Schedules

Cash4Life is a multi-state lottery game. To play, you have to pick 5 numbers from 1-60 plus a Cash Ball number from 1-4.

Matching all 6 numbers will win you $1,000 a day for life. If you match all 5 regular numbers but not the Cash Ball, you win the second prize instead: $1,000 a week for life.

Cash4Life draws take place every Monday and Thursday at 9 PM EST.

Bank a Million

The Virginia Lottery’s Bank a Million game gives you three jackpots to choose from: $1,000,000; $500,000; or $250,000, all after taxes.

Which one you can win depends on your wager: $2 bets make you eligible to win $1M; $1 bets are eligible to win up to $500,000; and $0.50 bets can win up to $250,000. You can mix and match wager amounts, as long as you pay at least a total of $2 per ticket.

To play, you must select 6 numbers from 1-40. Your numbers must match all 6 winning ones drawn to hit the jackpot for your wager group.

You can also win additional prizes by matching the Bonus Ball. You don’t need to pick an extra number for this — an additional ball will be drawn, and if any of your 6 numbers match it, you’re considered a match for the Bonus Ball.

Bank a Million draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 11 PM EST.

Cash 5

The Virginia Cash 5 carries a $100,000 jackpot for each draw. There are two draws a day, and you can play for as little as $0.25 as long as your ticket totals a minimum of $1.

To play, you must select 5 numbers from 1-34. You need to match all 5 winning draw numbers to snag the jackpot.

Virginia Cash 5 draws are held every day at 1:59 PM and 11 PM EST.

Pick 4

The Virginia Lottery Pick 4 has a jackpot of $5000 and twice-daily draws.

The amount you can win depends on how much you wager and the playstyle you choose. You win the jackpot when your ticket matches the winning draw numbers in exact order.

To play, you must pick 4 numbers, each from 0-9, and choose from the following playstyles:

  • Exact Order: You must match the winning numbers in the exact order.
  • Any Order: You can match the winning numbers in any order.
  • 50/50: You can match the winning numbers in any order or in exact order. Available only at $1 per ticket.
  • Combo: You get to play Exact Order bets for all possible combinations of your chosen numbers, boosting your chance of winning.

Virginia Pick 4 game draws are held twice a day at 1:59 PM and 11 PM Eastern Time.

Pick 3

Like the Virginia Pick 4, the Pick 3 lottery has draws twice a day (day and evening). The jackpot is set at $500, though how much you win depends on your chosen playstyle and your wager amount.

To play, you must pick a number from 000 to 999. You must then choose a playstyle and bet amount, as well as a draw schedule (day or evening), and how many draws you wish to play. You snag the jackpot when your combination matches the winning draw numbers in exact order.

You can choose from 5 different playstyles:

  • Exact Order: You must match the winning numbers in the exact order.
  • Any Order: You can match the winning numbers in any order.
  • 50/50: You can match the winning numbers in any order or in exact order. Available only at $1 per ticket.
  • Combo: You get to play Exact Order bets for all possible combinations of your chosen numbers, boosting your chance of winning.
  • Pairs: You select 2 numbers (instead of 3). These must match the first 2, the last 2, or the first and last winning numbers in exact order, depending on the kind of pair you choose to play.

You can win additional prizes by adding the BOOST option to your ticket. This prints 5 extra sets of Easy Pick numbers on your ticket. If one of these BOOST numbers matches the winning draw numbers, you’ll get an extra $100 (for a $1 play) or $50 (for a $0.50 play).

Virginia Pick 3 games take place at 1:59 PM and 11 PM Eastern Time every day.

Virginia Lottery Second Chances

What is Second Chance?

Second chance games breathe new life into your non-winning tickets. By entering your non-winning tickets, you stand to win prizes in an alternative draw. These prizes can go as high as several million dollars per game. To learn more, check out our article on second chance games.

How does Second Chance work for the VA Lottery?

The Virginia Lottery runs second chance promotions under the eXTRA Chances program. Under this program, certain scratcher games carry an eXTRA Chances logo on all tickets. These tickets can be entered into a weekly second chance draw or, depending on the promotion, they can be eligible for bonus instant win prizes.

The value of the ticket corresponds to the number of entries you’ll get for the second chance draw. A $20 scratcher ticket, for example, gives you 20 entries.

You must have a Virginia Lottery MyGameRoom account to enter your scratcher tickets into the eXTRA Chances draws. Registration is free and is done entirely online.
