How to Play the California Daily Derby

The Daily Derby is one of the more unique games in the California Lottery lineup. You play by betting on the outcome of a virtual “horse race.” (Actually, the California Lottery Commission uses automated drawing machines for this game, same as other draw games.)

Here’s how it works:

  1. From a field of 12 horses, you select the ones you think will finish first, second, and third — 3 horses in all.
  2. Then you indicate the time that you think it will take the first horse to finish. This is called the Race Time, and it can be any time from 1:40:00 to 1:49:99. All you have to do is provide the last 3 digits of your Race Time. For example, to bet 1:45:40, you would use 5:40 for your ticket.

You get different prizes depending on how many horses and places you match, as well as whether you match the Race Time. If you pick all 3 winning horses in the correct order and get the right Race Time, you net the Grand Prize.
