About the Illinois Lottery

The Illinois State Lottery was established in July 1974 and is the official lottery for the state.

Today, it is operated by Allwyn North America under the Department of the Lottery.

Since its launch, the Illinois official lottery has raised billions of dollars for public programs.

Proceeds first supported the General Revenue Fund, but in 1985, they were redirected to the Common School Fund, which continues to provide vital support for K-12 education.

Over the years, lottery revenue has also helped fund the Capital Projects Fund, as well as causes such as breast cancer research, multiple sclerosis support, and assistance for Illinois veterans.

Illinois Lottery rules

If you plan to play the IL Lottery, you must follow these rules:

  • Players must be 18 years or older to purchase tickets.

  • To buy Illinois Lottery tickets online, you must be an Illinois resident, physically located in the state at the time of purchase, and have an active Illinois Lottery account.

  • Tickets purchased in person must come from a licensed Illinois Lottery retailer.

  • Employees of the Illinois Lottery and individuals involved in managing or overseeing the drawings cannot play.

  • Family members or household members of Illinois Lottery employees are also ineligible.

  • Players must not tamper with, resell, or alter tickets in any way.

Can I buy IL tickets online?

Yes, you can buy tickets online for Mega Millions, Powerball, LuckyDay Lotto, Lotto with Extra Shot, Pick 3, and Pick 4, as long as you follow certain rules.

You should be at least 18 years old, an Illinois resident, and physically located in the state at the time of purchase.

In addition, you will need to have opened an Illinois Lottery account.

Players can use the official site of the Illinois Lottery or the mobile app to purchase lottery tickets.

However, Fast Play and Instant Tickets cannot be bought online.

Illinois Lottery games

The Illinois Lottery offers a mix of national favorites and state-exclusive games.

From multi-million jackpots to daily draws, there are options for every type of player.

1. Powerball

You can easily win millions of dollars by playing Powerball in Illinois.

All you have to do is choose 5 numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26.

You can multiply your chances of winning with the Power Play option.

Each play costs $2, and the drawings are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 9:59 pm CT.

  • Pick 5 numbers (1-69) + 1 Powerball (1-26); Power Play optional for $1.

  • Tickets cost $2 per play.

  • Drawings: Monday, Wednesday, Saturday at 9:59 pm CT.

  • Check winning Illinois Lottery numbers online or in the official app.

2. Mega Millions

Mega Millions has been a part of the Illinois Lottery game selection since it first appeared in 1996.

Nowadays, Mega Millions Illinois is a favorite among players within the state.

To play Mega Millions, you have to pick five numbers between 1 and 70, as well as a Mega Ball number between 1 and 25.

Each Mega Millions play costs only $2, but its progressive jackpot could see a lucky winner bag millions.

For a dollar more, similar to Lucky Day Lotto, Mega Millions Multiplier option lets players make use of the same combination of numbers more than once.

The Mega Millions draws take place every Tuesday and Friday at 10:00 pm CT.

  • Pick 5 numbers (1-70) + 1 Mega Ball (1-25); Megaplier is optional for $1.

  • Tickets cost $2 per play.

  • Drawings: Tuesday and Friday at 10:00 pm CT.

  • View the latest Illinois Mega Millions results on the site or app.

3. Lucky Day Lotto

For just a dollar per play, Lucky Day Lotto could bring you the big bucks.

Lucky Day Lotto rules are simple: select five numbers between 1 and 45.

Unlike Mega Millions, you can play Lucky Day Lotto one or more combinations once a day.

If you’ve bought a Lucky Day Lotto ticket from a retailer, you can add EZMatch to it.

This way, you’ll get a second set of five numbers printed onto your Lucky Day Lotto ticket and have an extra shot at winning up to $5,000 instantly.

Lucky Day Lotto drawings are held daily, at 12:40 pm and 9:22 pm CT.

  • Pick 5 numbers (1-45); $1 per play.

  • Drawings twice daily: 12:40 pm and 9:22 pm CT.

  • EZmatch add-on ($1) for instant-win prizes up to $5,000.

  • Known for strong odds among Illinois draw games.

4. Lotto

This game gives you not one, not two, but three shots at winning.

Each $2 play will enter your combination of six numbers between 1 and 50 into three separate draws.

Plus, unlike Mega Millions if you add the Extra Shot option to your ticket, which will cost you a dollar more, you’ll be able to increase your winnings.

You can play Lotto Illinois every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday at 9:22 pm CT.

  • $2 ticket includes the main Lotto draw + Lotto Million 1 and Lotto Million 2.

  • Pick 6 numbers (1-50) or use Quick Pick.

  • Extra Shot add-on ($1) boosts non-jackpot prize opportunities.

  • Drawings: Monday, Thursday, Saturday at 9:22 pm CT; check Illinois Lotto numbers here.

5. Pick 3

Pick 3 gives you an opportunity to win prizes twice a day.

Unlike Mega Millions, with Pick 3 Illinois, you can just pick three numbers between 0 and 9, the amount you’d like to wager, $0.50 for a prize of $250 or $1 for a $500 prize, a drawing time, and a playstyle.

  • Straight: With this playstyle, you’ll have to match the winning numbers in the exact order.
  • Box: Here, it’s important to guess the winning numbers, regardless of their order.
  • Straight/Box: Opting for this style means you need to match the numbers either in the exact order or in any order.
  • Combo: This type of betting allows you to play all straight combinations on one ticket.
  • Front pair: As you might have guessed, this style lets you match the first two winning digits in the exact order.
  • Back pair: Contrary to the previous option, here you’ll need to guess the last two winning numbers in the exact order.

You can win in more than one way by playing the Fireball option, which doubles your wager and adds a bonus number drawn to your ticket.

Pick 3 drawings take place every day at 12:40 pm and 9:22 pm CT.

  • Choose 3 digits (0-9); multiple play styles available.

  • Stakes from $0.50 up to $500 on a $1 Straight.

  • Drawings twice daily: 12:40 pm and 9:22 pm CT.

  • Fireball add-on increases combinations, sometimes called Illinois Cash 3.

6. Pick 4

Pick 4 Illinois Lottery game can make you up to $5,000 richer every day.

Unlike Mega Millions, Pick 4 shares the rules with the previous game we’ve discussed, with one exception: here, you’ll need to choose 4 instead of 3 numbers from 0 to 9.

Once again, the Pick 4 Fireball mode can boost your chances of hitting the grand prize.

Just like with Pick 3, drawings occur daily, at 12:40 pm and 9:22 pm CT.

  • Choose 4 digits (0-9); multiple play styles available.

  • Stakes from $0.50 up to $5,000 on a $1 Straight.

  • Drawings twice daily: 12:40 pm and 9:22 pm CT.

  • Fireball add-on can create more winning combos.

What is Second Chance?

Second Chance drawings are promotional drawings that allow you to utilize your non-winning tickets to win different kinds of prizes.

In 1985, legislation directed lottery proceeds to the Common School Fund, which supports K-12 public education.

Illinois was also the first state in the US to offer online lottery ticket sales, launching its iLottery platform in 2012.

Today, the Illinois Lottery is operated by Camelot Illinois under the Department of the Lottery.
