About Florida Lottery

The 1986 general election approved a constitutional amendment to create the Florida Lottery, and the first tickets went on sale in 1988.

Since then, the FL Lottery has awarded more than $73 billion in prizes and made nearly 3,000 players millionaires.

It also directs billions to education, funding Bright Futures scholarships and statewide school projects.

Today, the Florida Lottery features games like Florida Lotto, Florida Pick 4, Pick 3 Florida, Florida Lottery Pick 5, Fantasy 5, Jackpot Triple Play, and national draws such as Florida Mega Millions and Powerball.

With over 13,000 retailers, players can easily purchase tickets and check Florida Play 4 winning numbers, FL Fantasy 5 results, or the latest jackpots.

How to play Florida Lottery

Florida Lottery games are available to anyone aged 18 or older, and tickets can be purchased from more than 13,000 authorized retailers across the state.

To play, you choose your game, select numbers manually or use Quick Pick, and decide on any add-on features such as Power Play, Megaplier, Double Play, or EZmatch.

Once purchased, make sure to sign the back of your ticket to protect your claim if it is lost or stolen.

Can you play Florida Lottery online?

No, you cannot play the FL Lottery entirely online.

However, the official Florida Lottery app allows players to scan tickets, view results, and enter Second Chance drawings.

All tickets for games like Florida Lotto, Florida Powerball, and Fantasy 5 must be bought in person from an authorized retailer.

Can you buy Florida Lottery tickets online?

Tickets for draw games and scratch-offs cannot be purchased directly online.

Florida law requires you to buy tickets at licensed retailers.

The FL online lottery services only provide information, winning numbers, and promotions, but do not sell tickets.

Florida Lottery tickets

Florida has over 13,000 authorized retail parlors where players can purchase game tickets and scratch-offs.

Tickets are available statewide for draw games such as Florida Lotto, Powerball, Mega Millions, Fantasy 5, and the daily Pick games.

Scratch-offs range in price from $1 to $30, with top prizes reaching as high as $15 million.

Unlike in many other states, where winning tickets stay valid for a year, in Florida, residents have only 180 days to come forward and claim the prize.

For tickets with a cash option, the prize must be claimed within 60 days of the drawing.

Players should always sign the back of their ticket immediately after purchase to safeguard ownership in case the ticket is lost or stolen.

Can I buy FL Tickets online?

No, Florida doesn’t allow online lottery games.

The only way to buy a ticket or participate in the game is to visit an authorized retailer.

You can use the FL Lottery website to follow the latest Florida lottery results, find winning numbers and jackpots, or take part in Second Chance games.

Tax info: Does Florida tax lottery winnings?

Florida does not impose state income tax on lottery prizes, which makes it one of the most favorable states for winners.

However, federal taxes still apply, and the amount withheld depends on whether you are a US citizen, resident, or a non-resident alien.

All winnings of $600 or more are reported to the IRS, and federal withholding begins at $5,000.

Winners may also be required to submit additional tax forms, such as a W-9 form for US citizens or a W-8BEN for non-residents.

Florida Lottery tax rates

Prize Value US Citizens / Residents Non-Residents
$600 or less No federal tax withheld No federal tax withheld
Over $600 – $5,000 Reported to IRS, but no withholding 30% federal tax withheld
Over $5,000 24% federal tax withheld 30% federal tax withheld
State Tax None None

Important notes

  • Winnings must still be declared on your annual tax return, even if no tax was withheld.

  • Federal backup withholding may apply if the winner does not provide a valid Social Security number.

  • Group winners or trusts must complete additional claim forms, such as the Entity Claim Form.

  • Non-residents are subject to a flat 30% federal withholding on all prizes, regardless of amount.

Florida Lottery App

Unfortunately, Florida doesn’t support online lottery games, meaning all lottery tickets must be bought in person.

Still, FL residents can install a lottery app on their iOS and Android devices and use it to:

  • See the winning numbers and jackpots
  • View past winners
  • Find instructions on how to play a lottery game
  • Scan the ticket and see whether they’ve won
  • Enter Second Chance drawings
  • Find the nearest Florida Lottery retail parlor, etc

You can create an account on the official Florida Lottery website, apply for Second Chance drawings, or get notifications about the latest jackpots.

Alternatively, you can sign up for text message alerts, which will allow the lottery to send you relevant information.

Download the official FL Lottery App through the App Store and Google Play Store by clicking on the links.

Florida Lottery Subscription

The Florida Lottery does not currently offer a subscription service, but it did exist in 2021.

Players must buy tickets in person at authorized retailers for each drawing.

Advance Play is the only option to enter multiple upcoming draws at once, but there is no longer a subscription service.

Florida Lottery history

The Florida Lottery was created following a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 1986.

Ticket sales began on January 12, 1988, with the first game being a $1 scratch-off called Millionaire, which offered a $1 million top prize.

Within just 17 days, the Lottery repaid the $15.5 million start-up loan to the state’s general fund, plus interest.

Over the years, the Lottery has expanded to include multi-state games like Powerball, Mega Millions, and Cash4Life, alongside state-exclusive favorites such as Florida Lotto, Fantasy 5, and Jackpot Triple Play.

Where the funds go

The primary mission of the Florida Lottery is to support public education. Since 1988, the Lottery has contributed more than $46 billion to educational initiatives.

These funds have provided over 880,000 Bright Futures Scholarships, supported K-12 programs, and financed the construction and renovation of schools across the state.

On average, the Lottery contributes over $1 billion annually to education.

All proceeds go into the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund, which directly benefits students and teachers throughout Florida.

Notable Florida Lottery winners

Florida has produced some of the biggest lottery winners in U.S. history:

  • In August 2023, a Mega Millions ticket sold in Neptune Beach won $1.602 billion, the largest prize ever won in Florida and the biggest Mega Millions jackpot at the time.

  • In 2013, Gloria Mackenzie, an 84-year-old from Zephyrhills, claimed a $590 million Powerball jackpot, the largest ever won by a single ticket at the time.

  • In 2018, Shane Missler, a 20-year-old from Port Richey, won $450 million in Mega Millions, choosing the lump-sum payout of $281.8 million.

  • In 2021, Thomas Yi of Land O’ Lakes won $235.4 million in Powerball at just 23 years old.

  • In 2021, an anonymous winner in Jacksonville purchased a $286 million Powerball ticket that has gone down as one of Florida’s biggest wins.
