About the Canada Lottery

The Canadian Lottery is operated by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation (ILC), which was founded in 1976. This organization is headquartered in Toronto and owned by the five provincial lottery commissions — Loto-Québec, Atlantic, British Columbia, Ontario, and Western Canada Lottery Corporation. The ILC administrates three regular national lottery games — Lotto 6/49, Lotto Max, and Daily Grand, but each provincial organization features additional games specifically available to players within its own jurisdiction.

Canada Lottery Rules

In order to be able to participate in Canada Lottery draws, you’ll need to abide by the following rules:

  • You must be 18 years old or above to purchase BC, Ontario, Loto-Québec, and Western Canada lottery tickets, and at least 19 years old to buy Atlantic Lottery tickets.
  • You can buy CA Lottery tickets from a Regional Marketing Organization, an authorized lottery retailer in the region, or over the internet.
  • You don’t need to be a resident of Canada to be able to play the CA Lottery games.
  • You must not issue, resell, forge, or tamper with CA Lottery tickets.
  • You should sign the front and fill in the back of the ticket after you’ve bought it as evidence that you are its rightful owner.
  • You must redeem your prize within a year from the draw date — that is, the end game date printed on the back of the instant game tickets.
  • Depending on the prize’s worth, you might have to fill in the Prize Claim Form.

Canada Lottery Tickets

Players who are 18 (or 19 for ALC) or above can purchase CA Lottery tickets from a Regional Marketing Organization, an authorized lottery retailer in their region or area, or online.

Can I Buy CA Tickets Online?

Yes, you can. Canadian provincial lottery corporations offer their tickets online. To find out the specific details, you should visit their official websites.

Canada Lottery Games and Drawing Schedule

Lotto 6/49

The oldest national lottery game on our list is Lotto 6/49. This one features two top prizes per draw — you can win a guaranteed $1 million or land a rolling jackpot that starts at $5 million. A ticket costs $3, and draws occur every Wednesday and Saturday night.

To play, you have to select six numbers from 1 to 49, and you’ll get an additional ten-digit set added to your ticket for a shot at that $1 million top prize. Depending on the provincial lottery you’re playing at, you might be able to use extra game features and increase your chances of winning.

Lotto Max

With this CA Lottery game, players can take home a rolling jackpot that starts at a whopping $10 million and keeps growing until it’s won. Lotto Max draws take place every Tuesday and Friday night.

In order to participate, you have to choose three sets of seven numbers from 1 to 50. Each ticket is $3 and you can play up to five times, making a total of 15 selections. You might also be able to multiply your winnings here, depending on the playing features on offer.

Daily Grand

This nationwide game grants Canadian lottery players a chance to win big, with prizes of $1,000 a day or $25,000 a year for the rest of your life up for grabs. Simply select five numbers between 1 and 49 and one Grand Number between 1 and 7. Each ticket costs $3, and the draws are held every Monday and Thursday night.

The secondary prize winner must match all five of their digits to the winning numbers, while the top prize winner needs to match their Grand Number to the drawn numbers, in addition to those five.

Lotto 6/49 Wednesday and Saturday night
Lotto Max Tuesday and Friday night
Daily Grand Monday and Thursday night

How to Claim a Lottery Prize in Canada

The way in which you’ll be able to claim your CA Lottery prize depends on the amount you’ve won, whether you’ve bought the ticket online or not, and which provincial lottery you’ve played at.

You can claim your winning tickets in the following ways: at the licensed retail location in the region, at the Regional Prize Payout location, Prize Office locations, by mail, or even online.

Those redeeming their prizes in person or via mail will be required to:

  1. Bring in or send the original signed winning ticket.
  2. Bring in or send a copy of a valid photo ID (both driver’s licence or BCID are acceptable).
  3. Bring in or send a filled-in Prize Claim Form. You should be able to find this document on the provincial lottery’s official website or request it from a retail location or the provincial lottery’s support center.
  4. Make copies of these documents for your own records.

Since all provincial lottery corporations have different rules when it comes to the prize claiming process, please visit the official website of the one you’re playing at for more detailed information.

  • OLG — This CA lottery branch has tons of scratchers on offer. These have prices ranging from $10 to $50 and come with prizes worth up to $3 million in cash.
  • WCLC — Western Canada lottery offers as many as 61 different types of scratch-offs, with prices varying from $1 to $50. It features prizes that can reach $3 million in cash, as well as lifetime prizes that can add $1,000 to your bankroll every week for the rest of your life.
  • BCLC — You’ll be able to choose from 84 different scratchers at the BC Lottery. For no more than $30, prizes worth up to $9,999,999 stand to be won.
  • Loto-Québec — This provincial lottery has multitudes of scratch-offs in its collection, including holiday-themed ones. The tickets cost anywhere from $1 to $30 and can make you up to $5 million richer.
  • ALC — Players will find 78 types of scratch tickets in the Atlantic Lottery’s Scratch ’N Win lounge. Their prices don’t go beyond $30 and feature prizes up to $3 million in cash.

Canada Lottery Second Chances —  What is Second Chance?

In these draws, players can have another shot at winning by using their non-winning tickets. Once again, Canadians will be able to find different types of Second Chance draws, depending on the provincial lottery they’re playing at.

How Does Second Chance Work for the CA Lottery?

Canada’s provincial lotteries feature numerous promotional Second Chance draws that players can participate in using their eligible non-winning scratch tickets. Most of these are promotional draws that are time-limited and/or holiday-themed. As such, they are available only for a certain period. However, ALC currently offers regular monthly Second Chance draws to all the players in its jurisdiction.

You can enter the Second Chance draws by creating a player account on the provincial lottery’s website and entering or scanning the codes from eligible tickets using the lottery’s mobile app.

Information on the Canada Lottery

Canada Lottery Apps and Technology

All Canadian provincial lotteries have native mobile apps compatible with both iOS and Android devices, which players can download from the Apple and Google Play stores.

Depending on the app in question, players might be able to use their phones to:

  • View winning numbers and check if they’ve won
  • Learn about jackpots and prize payouts
  • Scan ticket codes and enter Second Chance draws
  • Purchase tickets and play their favourite games
  • Deposit funds and withdraw their winnings

Canada Tax Information

You'll be happy to know that Canada doesn’t tax lottery winnings, regardless of whether the winner is a resident or not. Still, if you're not from Canada, your winnings might be subject to your own country of residence’s tax laws. We advise you to contact a tax professional to learn more about your specific situation.
